The tourism industry of the province of Iloilo suffered billions of pesos in losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Provincial Tourism Office (PTO).

PTO head Bombette Golez Marin said the province lost some P15 billion in tourism revenue from local and foreign arrivals in the first eight months of the year.

"So far, nagakasubo man kami gihapon sa tourism sector kay close gihapon ang resorts and tourism destinations like mga farms and recreational activities since we are observing the proper protocol," Marin said in an interview on IMT Conversations.

Despite the continuing threat of COVID-19, Marin said they continue to look for ways to promote the province's tourism products.

"We should think of alternatives. Bisan ginalapak lapak na kita sang pandemic, we want to let the public know that we are still here. Buhi pa kami," he stressed.

The PTO, in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT)-6, conducted online workshops to help towns develop their recovery plans.

"Gintrain man kmi sang DOT-6 about crisis management. So this will be an add on to tourism developing plan nga gina-ubra namon. And once ma approve sya, we will make it operational. We are scaling down our provincial efforts to towns. So basically sang una nga mga training namon sa province, ginashare namon sa mga towns in order for them to be guided," said Marin.

"As of now, amat-amat na mga events ta nga I-promote ang future destinations para makahelp man kita sa ila (tourism establishments). May initiative kita nga ginaubra," he added.IMT/Photo of Cabugao Gamay in Carles by Ronald M
